It's been a busy few months since I last posted. A house on the market. A baby turning one. A husband turning forty. Frigid temperatures in my adorable but not centrally heated studio. Not super-conducive to painting, I'm afraid, but with Christmas orders pouring in, I kicked it into high gear. In a true Christmas miracle, I managed to finish some well-deserved teacher gifts and a few other commissions in time to gloss on the day before the snow and single digit temperatures began.
I have been so blessed this month to have received so many custom orders. It is so humbling to me to be chosen to create something special enough to be given as a gift to a loved one...whether that be a teacher, friend, mother-in-law, boss, or sister.
This little red tweet was bought as a gift for a special mother-in-law to remind her of her mother who had recently passed but who loved red birds.
The tiny tweet on the top row went to a mother-in-law who loves turquoise. The flowers went to another mother-in-law. The yellow cross to a mother who recently redecorated in fun, bright colors. The trio of crosses went to a trio of friends who have been instrumental in the life of another friend. Each one was picked with love and care and thoughtfulness.
I even sold my first gift certificate, given as a token of respect and love from a group of teachers to their beloved boss.
On top of all that, I reached 200 fans on my facebook page (www.facebook.com/littleestudio) !!! I'm still in shock!! All I can say is that I am grateful, grateful, grateful for your support!
Thank you all for letting me be a part of your Merry Christmas!
Peace and Joy,

one tweet led to another
This cheery 24x24 was special ordered by a sweet client who is getting ready to move to a new home. She also picked up a huge green cross and a small yellow cross. I have to say I'm honored!
Originally, she just wanted flowers with a red background, but I got a little loopy late one night and poured too much brown paint on my palette. I hate wasting paint, so next thing you know there is a bird on her finished painting. Thank goodness she loved it!
Since this piece and its owner are headed for a new home, I thought it seemed right to call it "Happy Landings."
Enjoy!

bright and cheery
After many days away from brush, knife and canvas, I finally found time this weekend to do a little more experimenting. Food poisoning does nothing for the creative process, by the way, unless hallucinations from weakness count. So after several days of recovery and catching up on non-artistic ventures, I was ready for something bright and cheery!
If you are thinking about Christmas at all yet (which is completely insane, I know!), now is the best time to get your orders in. November will be a busy month with lots of big events at my house (Baby's 1st and Hubby's 40th). To make sure you get your paintings in time, order early!

wow! i look like a real artist!!!
In an effort to help me create some promotional materials for little e studio, my friend Mary Alice Duncan of www.maryaliceduncanphotography.com came over and took some action shots. As usual, I love everything she does and I really feel like she captured the feeling I wanted. You should definitely check out her website and all of her amazing photos.
I am using these shots to create postcards, business cards and photobooks so that I can take that next giant leap...applying to art shows and selling my work in a broader context. Scary stuff, my friends!
So thankful for friends who are willing to share their talents to help me achieve my dreams!!

A Lively Bunch
The other day I had a visitor to the studio who wanted to cheer up her living room with a little color and whimsy. So after talking we decided to take a painting I did for my baby's nursery and blow it up to a 24x24 square. This was so exciting for me because I get a lot of requests for crosses and flower baskets, which I love doing, but it was so nice to do something different and to have a challenge. The painting I was enlarging was a 10x10 and the flowers were tiny. I wasn't sure I could do them bigger, but I love how it turned out. And so did its new owner...which is all that really matters!!

I had a special guest in the studio last week thanks to my sweet friend and photographer, MaryAlice Duncan. MaryAlice is an extremely talented and gifted artist herself; she's taken amazing pictures of our Sweet Sophie B since she was in my belly. She is also extremely generous. She came to take pictures of me painting away so that I can create some promotional materials.
She just happened to bring along a little somebody special. You might recognize him from his blockbuster Twilight films. The tousled hair, the glistening skin. Yeah, that's right...Edward Cullen, vampire AND artist...feel free to swoon! Too funny! Even if no one else gets a giggle, we sure did!!
For all you anti-Twilighters out there, don't worry! I'll post the real pictures of little e studio in action soon!

Hmmmmm....Let's See....
July has been the month of flowers and special orders, but I still found time to experiment a little. You gotta keep it fresh!
I always keep a blank canvas close by because I tend to mix way too much paint and I hate to waste it...which is how this little number came to be.
I was hesitant to put it out there in cyberspace but I've gotten good feedback so here it is!! Enjoy!!!

What's in Store....
I've had lots of requests for pictures of current paintings for sale since most of the ones on my facebook fanpage are sold!
Woohoo!
Since crosses seem to be my biggest sellers, I tend to keep a lot on hand. I try to keep it fresh by experimenting with different color palettes. Sometimes, I actually can't sleep at night thinking about new and exciting color combos. I am also working on flowers of various sorts for custom orders and for fun. I'm trying to reserve some time to paint for me, to try new things, to stretch myself. Since I am mainly self-taught, I don't always know how to achieve the exact effect I want, so I am giving myself "permission to create" as my sweet friend and photographer Mary Alice reminded me recently. These experimenting sessions have already yielded some little jewels that I hope to share in the coming weeks...once I get my confidence up to put them out there in cyberspace.
But for now, here are some pictures of current available paintings. The first two pictures are paintings that need to be glossed in the next batch and the last three show paintings already glossed and ready to go.
Sizing info. The small flat panels are 4x6 or 5x8. Most of the ones pictured are 8x10. The big red square is 20x20. The huge green one is 24 x36. If you are interested in one, just send me an email! I can send you close ups or prices. Some closeups are on my facebook fan page or already on the blog. Have fun browsing!!

Oops...I did it again
Decision making has never been one of my strengths. That's why I love oops paint! Instead of a vast color wheel or a wall of tiny paint chips to choose from, I just go to the reject corner and see what strange and wonderful colors have been mixed incorrectly or did not live up to the customer's expectations. Every once in a while I stumble upon the perfect can of paint. A gallon of the perfect orange red or deep, glossy purple. Well, this month, I found a little gem. A quart of a Tiffany blue-turquoise in a satin finish for $2!! Well, it has completely pushed me into all sorts of crazy color combinations because it looks great with everything...orange, brown, apple green, golden yellow, red...somehow it works with them all! This painting was actually done before I got this fabulous quart of inspiration. It had a green background, but I decided to see what would happen if I added the blue and VOILA...love it! Hope you do, too!!!
12x12, thick canvas, mixed media, heavy gloss finish (pic taken before glossing).
Thank you all for a fabulous June. I sold 8 paintings plus 2 more to raise money for my friend Christy who has ALS. That equals 10 paintings in one month!!! I just may be on to something here!

New Things
Can this really be happening?!
If you had asked me two years ago what my life would look like, I would never have said the words "mother" or "artist", yet here I am, a mother of a beautiful, hilarious, loveable tub of goo named Sophie AND an artist with my very own website.
I still find it kind of strange to call myself an artist. When I was a little girl, I wanted to either write or illustrate children's books. I was either reading or drawing all the time. Somewhere along the way, reading won out and I became an English major in college. I wanted to find a way to get paid to read and discuss books. I found a way (and a passion) by tutoring and teaching English to children with learning differences for thirteen years. But even while making a living immersed in text, I was always searching for a creative outlet. Decoupage, sewing, refurbishing old furniture for an antique booth. I even fancied myself as a milliner for a brief period, taking lessons from an elderly lady named Orcelia in East Nashville.
Painting was a pipe dream. A little thought bubble that would pop up now and then. I remember watching Bob Ross on PBS when I was young and imagining myself painting lush landscapes with happy little trees. But I was intimidated. I was more crafty than artsy, I thought.
And life got in the way. I became engrossed in my job, eventually directing the program I worked for. The craft room (now studio) gathered dust. I closed my antique booth. I took my work home with me every night. I couldn't sleep. My creative juices dried up.
So I quit my job. Took a weekend painting class with some girlfriends. And I found myself happier than I had been in years. And to top it all off, people wanted to buy my paintings. I am still in awe of that...honored, humbled, amazed, blessed.
That, of course, is the short version of the story. The longer version involves a spiritual roller coaster and becoming a first-time mother after 15 years of marriage. But God's timing is perfect. He was faithful while I searched and grappled and He answered prayers of desparation and confusion. It is no accident that crosses figure prominently in my work. He gave me new life AGAIN.
"Forget the former things. Do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a NEW THING. Now it springs up; Do you not perceive it?" Isaiah 43: 18-19
Thank you for being part of this "new thing"...
Blessings,
Emily
